As we close the chapter on 2016, we begin anew with 2017, and in The Bahamas, we close the year off with oour annual Junkanoo Parade!
Junkanoo is an old Bahamian tradition first starting with out African ancestors with legends stating that the name originated from John Canoe, an African tribal chief who demanded the right to celebrate with his people even after being brought to the West Indies in slavery. During pre -and post -slavery days, Christmas was the greatest time for celebration in the Bahamas and Junkanoo was cemented as the historical event.
Junkanoo is now a time for good old Bahamian music and dancing. And a time for loved ones and friends to have a great time while learning of the customs of Bahamians. Next time maybe you can enjoy and learn about our Bahamian culture.
